DO YOU KNOW YOUR HAIR POROSITY ?

Hey queens, we're back!!!!! We are so sorry for staying away for so long 😭😭 our blog has been collecting dust. Forgive us. Well, we are here with a super informative post about hair porosity. Sit tight and you might learn a thing or two πŸ˜‰

Do you ever wonder why your hair doesn't absorb hair products well enough or why it absorbs products way too fast and leaves your hair dry and "unmoisturized" 🀷🏽‍♀️ ? Then this post is for you

First, let’s get into explaining what Hair porosity means , it simply refers to the hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It's about how your hair cuticles lie, either flat or low.
There are three porosity levels; high, low and normal.

So why is it important to know your hair porosity level ?

1)Its important in product selection - We can safely say that we all have products on our shelves we've used once and haven't laid fingers on again because it just didn't work. Knowing your hair porosity makes it easier to select the right products and also saves money and time.

2)lengthy/healthy hair -every naturals goal is to have both long and healthy hair and knowing your hair porosity helps to achieve this goal more than knowing hair type does.

3)better styling results - this is high key related to the first reason because it also deals with products. Your hair's reaction to a particular product is based on how porous your hair is.

       How  to discover your porosity level ;

If the hair floats ontop the water= LOW porosity
If the hair immediately sinks to the bottom= HIGH porosity
If the hair stays at the middle= NORMAL porosity

Here are a few things to note after knowing your porosity level;

For LOW POROSITY; its means your hair cuticles lie really flat and it takes a while for moisture to get into the hair. The good thing about having low porosity hair is that once moisture gets in, it doesn't get out easily. The stressful part of having this kind of hair is properly getting moisture into the hair. Some tips to dealing with this type of hair are;
*Low porosity hair loves heatπŸ”₯, so its advisable to heat up your deep conditioners before applying it to your hair strands, you can do this by placing your deep conditioner in an applicator bottle or any available container and immersing it in boiled water to just warm the product a little bit, please my dears, dont boil the product.

*Incorporate humectants like honey, aloe vera and glycerin into your products. This helps to draw moisture from the environment into your hair.

*Low porosity hair is prone to product build up, therefore, regular deep cleansing such as shampooing and bentonite clay masks are advised.

*Use light oils such as argan oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil to seal in moisture using the L.C.O. method.
* Some say people with low porosity hair should avoid protein well that's not correct.. EVERYBODY NEEDS PROTEIN! With low porosity hair, you could do a protein treatment once every 6-8weeks at least.

For HIGH  POROSITY; it simply means the hair cuticles are raised and do not lie flat. Moisture gets in really quickly and escapes quickly aswell. The hair strands are kinda like a sponge, it soaks up and dries up easily without retaining moisture. Some tips to dealing with this include;

*Regular protein treatment, atleast once every 4 weeks. Due to the gaps in the hair strands, the protein helps fill in the gaps, protein treatments include products rich in hydrolyzed protein and amino acids or DIYs like avocado πŸ₯‘ masks or henna application.

*Use of heavy butters and thick oils to seal in moisture with the L.O.C method. Butters like whipped shea and thick oils like castor oil, olive and coconut oil.

For NORMAL POROSITY; the hair easily accepts and retains moisture inside the cuticle. It requires little maintenance.

Knowing your porosity level is the first step to understanding your hair and things just begin to make more sense😁 please note that porosity levels can also change overtime due to chemical processes such as heat and regular deep conditioning.
 Both Sandra and I have low porosity hair and we would love to know your porosity levels aswell, so please take the quick test and share your results with us. Thank you so much for reading, we love youuuuu! Don't forget to uplift each other, queensss πŸ’•πŸ’•
